Attendance Matters

Attendance Matters

At Calvine, we believe that attendance is essential to student success. Our educational model is built around meaningful, in-person learning experiences that help students stay connected, supported, and engaged.

While we offer an alternative schedule to provide flexibility, consistent attendance is still a key part of meeting each student’s academic and developmental needs.
Two common challenges that affect attendance are absences and tardiness. Missing class time—whether by being late or not attending—can interrupt learning and make it harder for students to keep up.

We encourage families to prioritize attendance and partner with us in building strong habits that lead to long-term success.

Absences

There are two types of absences: excused and unexcused. Regardless of the type, any absence can disrupt a student’s learning. To support academic success, students are expected to maintain at least 90% attendance as outlined in the Voluntary Transfer Contract.

Ed Code Section 48205 indicates absences for the following reasons will be marked as an excused absence:

  • Personal illness or injury (allotted 14 days each school year without a doctor’s note)
  • Quarantine under the direction of a county health officer.
  • Medical, dental optometric or chiropractic services.
  • Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family
  • Pupil is the custodial parent of a child who is ill or has a medical appointment during school.
  • Exclusion for failure to present evidence of immunization.
  • Exclusion from school because student is either the carrier of a contagious disease or not immunized for a contagious disease.

Chronic Absenteeism

Chronic absenteeism is when a student misses 10% or more of the school year, regardless of whether the absences are excused or unexcused. This problem leads to poor academic performance, lower reading levels, and increased dropout rates.
At Calvine, we are committed to working closely with families to identify the root causes of attendance challenges and provide meaningful support. We’re willing to explore schedule adjustments, personalized interventions, and connections to community resources to help students get back on track. Our goal is to partner with families to create solutions that support consistent attendance and long-term success.
